Honeycomb Geometry: Rigid Motions on the Hexagonal Grid
نویسندگان
چکیده
Euclidean rotations in R2 are bijective and isometric maps, but they generally lose these properties when digitized in discrete spaces. In particular, the topological and geometric defects of digitized rigid motions on the square grid have been studied. This problem is related to the incompatibility between the square grid and rotations; in general, one has to accept either relatively high loss of information or non-exactness of the applied digitized rigid motion. Motivated by these facts, we study digitized rigid motions on the hexagonal grid. We establish a framework for studying digitized rigid motions in the hexagonal grid—previously proposed for the square grid and known as neighborhood motion maps. This allows us to study non-injective digitized rigid motions on the hexagonal grid and to compare the loss of information between digitized rigid motions defined on the two grids.

Analytical Honeycomb Geometry for Raster and Volume Graphics
In this paper we investigate the advantages of using hexagonal grids in raster and volume graphics. In 2D, we present a hexagonal graphical model based on a hexagonal grid. In 3D, we introduce two honeycomb graphical models in which the voxels are hexagonal prisms, and we show that these are the only possible models under certain reasonable conditions. In the framework of the proposed models, w...

This paper gives a proof of the classical honeycomb conjecture: any partition of the plane into regions of equal area has perimeter at least that of the regular hexagonal honeycomb tiling.
متن کاملHexagonal vs. Rectilinear Grids for Explicit Finite Difference Schemes for the Two-dimensional Wave Equation
Finite difference schemes for the 2-D wave equation operating on hexagonal grids and the accompanying numerical dispersion properties have received little attention in comparison to schemes operating on rectilinear grids. This paper considers the hexagonal tiling of the wavenumber plane in order to show that the hexagonal grid is a more natural choice to emulate the isotropy of the Laplacian op...
متن کاملOn minimum metric dimension of honeycomb networks
A minimum metric basis is a minimum set W of vertices of a graph G(V,E) such that for every pair of vertices u and v of G, there exists a vertex w ∈ W with the condition that the length of a shortest path from u to w is different from the length of a shortest path from v to w. The honeycomb and hexagonal networks are popular mesh-derived parallel architectures. Using the duality of these networ...
متن کاملFreeform Honeycomb Structures
Motivated by requirements of freeform architecture, and inspired by the geometry of hexagonal combs in beehives, this paper addresses torsion-free structures aligned with hexagonal meshes. Since repetitive geometry is a very important contribution to the reduction of production costs, we study in detail “honeycomb structures”, which are defined as torsion-free structures where the walls of cell...
